For those of you who have just stumbled upon my channel: Hello and Welcome! My name is Kate and I have a passion for sharing beauty tidbits from the past. I can often be found with my nose buried in an antique formula book, working out how to bring these historical beauty recipes to life. When not creating beauty products (cold cream, eyeshadows, hair tonics, etc), I love delving into the small and mundane things of everyday life for women around the turn of the century (how did they brush their hair, what was in their purses, what did they use for shampoo?).
All my videos are well researched and often based off of tutorials from authentic period sources (such as old magazines and books from the time). While I cover a variety of eras, I tend to focus on period from about 1860 through to 1940.
Please join me as I delve into the world of vintage hairstyling, beauty potions, as well as a smattering of kitchen recipes, fashion, and DIY projects.

Trying Two Lipstick Recipes from 1924
I haven't made makeup in ages and thought it would be fun to try out two different lipstick recipes from the 1920s! While these aren't my favourite base, they are ridiculously quick and easy to make, very moisturizing, plus give decent pigment-results.

Vanilla Rose "Snow Cream" ~ Historical Cold Cream Recipe ~
Переглядів 1,4 тис.6 місяців тому
This week, I'm trying another historical cold cream recipe. Well technically I'm blending two recipes together: one from the 1920s and another from the Edwardian period. It is a rich, silky cream with a sweet rose scent. Perfect for chapped winter hands or as a rich body lotion (it can be used on the face too if you like a heavier moisturizer or just use a small dab). Hope my mom likes her Chri...
One Minute Edwardian Beauty Recipes: Holiday Edition

I tried 5 different beauty recipes this week from the late Edwardian period and the 1910s. The recipes (a simple hand moisturizer, a lip balm, a fizzy bath powder, and two different perfumes/room sprays) were selected as they are either great for this chilly time of year or because they would make a great quick gift (or both!). Plus all of them can be made in approximately a minute or so! FIND ...

Haha, ok "great" may be a bit of an overstatement, but I did try a variety of different rag curler types this week. I varied both material, size, and construction method, to come up with the "ideal rag curler" (for my hair anyways). 1920s True Daytime & Evening Makeup

In this video, I'll be demonstrating two everyday makeup looks. These are easy and simpler than the makeup that was used in Hollywood at the time (which is an entirely different kettle of fish!). It may looks less stereotypically 1920s than the over-drawn cartoonish look many people associate with this era, but simplicity and subtly were two key attributes of "real" 1920s makeup trends! love this!@! i was thinking maybe i can just use a twisted scarf??
It's so cute
I’m jealous of that hair, stunning !!😍
كيف أحصل عليه ؟
Im new to your channel and I love your tutorials! even though i have curly hair, i am going to try these styles since my hair is long and i cannot do a faux bob as much I try lol 😂 i like these styles because they are simple and practical!
You should’ve shown the original recipe. Now just wondering what the pigment was which you switched out for iron oxide 🤔
I listed the source of the recipe in the video so you can look it up if you want (it's on archive.org). A lot of lipsticks from this time had either coal-dyes or carmine as their pigment, but this recipe was a bit different. One pigment option was a turmeric-based extract and I think the other one might have been extracted for alkanet based on the name (neither of which I could find available for purchase for the home-crafter).
You need this clips not for waving on their own. In addition there are blended combs. You fingerwave your hair in an s pattern with your hand and a fine normal comb. For the vale you use the blended combs to hold it for the mountain top you use the clips to secure the s pattern. I did it like my grandma told me, worked. She had no natural curls, I have.
I know this video is 9 months old, but do you remember what nail polish you wore in this video? I love it!
Thanks! I don't quite remember but I think it's probably the shade "Wild Child" by Piggy Paint.
Coming from another "Kate" (but i go by Katie/Kat) who also has an eye for fashion and style, that specific shade of red in your sweater really suits you! I also love your black bow-beret! It's adorable! I also love your recipes and formulations, and dream of investing in this to try them myself! Thank you for inspiring me during hard times 🫶🏻
What is the powder that is colored?
I used a makeup-grade mica as colour.
Nice and interesting. Maybe this would be great for making kiss marks on my flapper.
This is so fascinating.
I love strong tinted lip balms, so these looks like a good option.
Hi Kate, thanks for another cute lippie video! Have you tried using reusable piping bags (usually for frostings) to "pipe" the lipstick into the tubes? Maybe you could warm the product up enough to pipet/pour it into tubes, too? I LOVE that beret & compact, as well as the super shiny hennaed coils! Thx again~ 🖤J
That's a great idea! I've tried a plastic syringe type thing before, which just ended up making a bigger mess, but a piping bag sounds like it might work better.
It often happens that you post a new video just when I've had a difficult few days and need a pleasant, cheerful distraction from Vintageland...and you've done it again! 😊
Hope your days get better 💜
So what I've gathered from this is that fixing cold cream has surprising resemblances to fixing software (Try re-doing it and maybe I'll work this time. Solves about 70% of the issues I deal with on a daily basis 😂)
Haha, pretty much!
I love the shiny green nail polish, it's so pretty!
You look great! Glad you’re back! Love your hair color! 🤍
Thank you! 😊
Oooo I might actually try and make these, maybe add something to make it a more blue based red💜💜💜
Recipe Notes: - Be sure to use makeup-grade, lip-safe pigments only. - If you prefer “tinted lipbalm” look rather than a full lipstick, add in less pigment. Or you could omit the pigment entirely and just use this recipe as a lipbalm base. - Some pigments may be stronger or weaker than others, so if you are not using the iron oxide you may need to experiment a bit to figure out how much is best to add. - Botanical pigments such as alkanet may require extra steps. (Alkanet needs to be steeped in warmed oil first to release the pigment then strained out) - Another liquid oil can be swapped in for the olive oil / almond oil (although some might wear better than others) - The vitamin E oil is entirely optional, but will help the oils stay fresh for longer and thus extend the shelf-life of the lipstick.
Love the colours 😍! And the simplicity of the recipe 🤩 I’ll definitely have to try making it! Thank you so much 🥰🙏
The one with hibiscus tea looks great
Money was in short supply during the depression. Simple makeup make since.
Yes to lipstick and reno videos; hair pomade, too🤩! But lippie recipes are always on my radar🤓🙏 Nice to see you back 😍🥰✨
❤
OMG im like 10 yrs and need this for my spring sing! TYSM! (stands for thank you so much)
Your videos never fail to be awesome !
I commented this on the original video, but for anyone who's wondering, this works really well in hot weather! I made some recently (poured into a tube) and it's been very consistently good across wild temperature swings and stays pretty much the same texture when carried in a pants pocket. Highly recommend! And it lasts longer on the lips than any other lip balm I've used. Also, it's a pretty natural finish (not visibly shiny) and works very well under lipstick
I'm so happy you've posted again! I needed a good lip balm recipe to replace the one I currently buy, and this is nice and simple to try. I may need to use a bit more beeswax so I can use the balm as a protective layer under lipstick. It'll be fun to see what I come up with!
You're back! It's time to celebrate 🥂 with a vintage champagne 🍾 in an antique glass 🎉 l missed you but l happily binge watched your older episodes. I hope you're well & am looking forward to more of your unique brand of uplifting, useful content 🤗
Love historical cosmetics! Thank you for this!
I think you’re doing everything correctly except the removal. I have naturally curly hair so grew up being extra careful with any kind of curler. The part you were doing incorrectly is trying to just pull from the bottom. The key is pull from the bottom gently while using your other hand to simultaneously unwind, the felt from your hair. No pain, no frizz, and a lovely curl! Love your videos!
Thanks for the tip! Unwinding doesn't work well for my hair but I'm sure that suggestion will help someone else browsing the comments 🙂. I really should have further explained how I remove my curlers in the video, as from the comments I realize it's not totally clear and looks like I'm just ripping them out! I am (gently) pulling the curler out through the center of the curl, as when I unwind curlers I always get misshapen and frizzy curls (I think it's something to do with my hair type). If I slide the curler out through the center of the curl (which does work with most curler types) I get perfectly formed ringlets with no damage or pain.
What book was this found in?
Oops, bad past-me for not giving the source in the video! It's from Handicraft for Handy Girls; Practical Plans for Work and Play (1916).
@@TheLongHairedFlapper thank you :D
Im indian i love Edwardian beauty style royuine
UA-cam didn't show me the duster video. Wasn't pushed out.
I'm from India..I'm not able to buy goody finger wavy hair clips..so can you plz help me in anyway regarding this Mam?
I tried the "hand cream" poured into lip balm tubes and it works really well for hot weather and keeping in pockets! For reference, it's currently 80 degrees and keeping it in a pants pocket didn't noticeably change the texture. When used from a tube, it forms a very thin layer, but it lasts better than any other lip balm I've used. Not very shiny, plays well with lipstick. Dunno if it'll be too stiff in cold weather, I guess I'll find out
can you make martha harper's hair tonic?
Clearly when she said her hair at times came out in clumps all I could think of is when she said she applied Mercury to the roots of her hair at night. 😳
Do you think this could be done with foam rollers instead? I don’t have a sewing machine to make kid curlers, but I do have foam rollers! :)
I have tried it before and this technique does technically work with foam rollers. It's veeeerrrrryyy uncomfortable to sleep on though. I found the kid curlers to be less-ouchie (although certainly not comfy!), which is why they are my preference, but I did get decent results from the foam rollers.
Although with respect to not having a sewing machine, one viewer made these with just hand-stitching and reported back she had great results. I'm not a big fan of hand-stitching myself, but it is an option if you want to make some but don't have a machine :)
Ah, that’s good to know. Thanks for saving me from the pain! 😅
I Love IT! ❤️
Can I skip bee wax
The beeswax gives the cream it's thickness and texture, so eliminating it will change the consistency of what you end up with. If you take beeswax out a recipe, I'd recommend swapping in another, similar wax.
Thank you! I am working on playing with vintage hairstyles, but I don't want to cut my long locks in doing so. So thank you, these are great ideas!
Don’t we need emulsifier?
This era of cold cream typically didn't use an emulsifier in formulations. They occasionally split, but I remember this particular formulation being fairly shelf-stable. You can always swap out a bit of the beeswax for some emulsifying wax if you are worried about it. (I find even when they do split, you can just take a spoon and stir it back together in about 5 seconds though, and it doesn't really affect the effectiveness of the product).
